Project Partner

Silicon Austria Labs GmbH

Silicon Austria Labs (SAL) is a top European research center for electronic based systems (EBS). SAL is conducting research in the areas of Microsystems, Sensor Systems, Power Electronics, Intelligent Wireless Systems and Embedded Systems to develop future-oriented solutions for industrial production, health, energy, mobility and safety.

Silicon Austria Labs (SAL) is a top research center for electronic based systems (EBS), which are the technological backbone of digitization. The application-oriented center offers cooperative research at three locations – Graz, Linz and Villach – in the pioneering research areas of Microsystems, Sensor Systems, Intelligent Wireless Systems, Power Electronics and Embedded Systems. SAL brings together key players from industry, science and research and thus valuable expertise and know-how and conducts cooperative, application-oriented research along the value chain. Cooperative projects are co-financed by SAL and enable a fast and unbureaucratic project start. SAL is thus shaping the high-tech locations Austria and Europe and "unfolds the future".

Role in the project

SAL is the leader of WP2 focusing on MEMS chip development. SAL is also actively devoting to the technology of analogue frontend (AFE) ASIC development (WP3), chip packaging (WP4) and intelligent algorithm (WP5). SAL will pay more attention on the targeted measuring parameters from different use cases, especially focusing on the application of Health (UC1 & 8) & Wellbeing and Digital industry.

Key contribution to the project

SAL will focus on solid/liquid coupled PMUTs and PMIC. For the PMUT, the concept includes 1D and 2D arrays with a bimorph actuation for improved resolution in tissue, using dual frequency harmonic imaging to increase the performance of the transducer in RX. A center frequency of 6 MHz with >80% fractional bandwidth (FBW) is targeted. For the PMIC, a PMIC with couples of similar shaped structure will be presented to improve the Rx sensitivity and extending its bandwidth from 0.1 to 100kHz.
